Two years ago yesterday, I received by HSV-2 diagnosis. I thought about it in the days leading up to the 17th, then it passed me right by.
Why did I forget?
Mostly because genital herpes is a nuisance skin condition and nothing more. It won’t kill me, it doesn’t cause other health issues, and other than coming to terms with the stigma, it hasn’t really caused me much grief at all.
Disclosure, while it remains difficult and daunting, has not been an issue. There have been a couple of men who decided not to pursue conversation, but they were super super super cool about it. Respectful and kind. The man I did date for a time simply didn’t have an issue with it and preferred to forego condoms.
In short, the worst thing about herpes is the stigma. After a bit, you accept it, all of it. And then you start to forget to mark the time when you got your diagnosis. And that’s a lovely place to be.
